Definition: Owning a home for a fixed number of years under a lease from the freeholder, rather than owning the building and land outright.

Most flats in England and Wales are leasehold. Leaseholders usually pay ground rent and service charges, and the lease can restrict what you do with the property. Conveyancing takes longer because the lease and management information must be checked.
