Definition: The legal work of transferring ownership of a property from the seller to the buyer, done by a solicitor or licensed conveyancer.

On a purchase it covers checking the title, ordering searches, raising enquiries, reporting to you and your lender, exchanging contracts, completing, paying the property tax and registering you as the owner. In Scotland the process is handled by solicitors and the contract is formed by an exchange of letters called missives.
