How long does it take to switch bank accounts?

Last reviewed:

In short: Seven working days from the date you choose, under the Current Account Switch Service (CASS). All Direct Debits, standing orders and incoming payments move automatically and the old account closes.

CASS is run by Pay.UK and offered by over 50 banks and building societies. You pick a switch date, and the new bank handles moving all standing orders, Direct Debits and incoming payments. Any payments sent to the old account in the following 36 months are automatically redirected.

The Current Account Switch Guarantee covers any errors: charges and interest caused by switching mistakes are refunded by the bank that made them, and complaints are handled within 20 working days.

You don't need to be in credit to switch, and switching is free regardless of overdraft size. Some banks offer cash incentives for switching — terms vary.
