What is Section 75 credit card protection?
Last reviewed:
In short: Your credit card provider is jointly liable with the retailer for breach of contract or misrepresentation on purchases between £100 and £30,000.
Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act makes your credit card provider equally liable for any breach of contract or misrepresentation by the seller, for goods or services costing more than £100 and not more than £30,000.
You can claim from either the retailer or the card provider — and you can still claim against the card provider if the retailer has gone bust. Cover applies even if you only paid part of the cost on the credit card (e.g. a £200 deposit on a £2,000 holiday).
Debit-card purchases and bank-transfer payments are not covered by Section 75, but a separate scheme called chargeback gives some similar protection on most card networks for around 120 days.
