IHT (Inheritance Tax)

Last reviewed:

Definition: A tax payable on an estate worth more than the £325,000 nil-rate band on death, with extra allowances for passing on a main residence and unused spousal bands.

The standard rate is 40% on the value above the nil-rate band. A residence nil-rate band of £175,000 applies when a main home passes to direct descendants. Both bands are frozen until April 2030 and the residence band tapers above £2m estates.
