How to switch your bank account in the UK (7-day guarantee)

In short. Use the free Current Account Switch Service (CASS) — your new bank handles the move in seven working days, redirects payments for at least three years, and refunds any charges caused by an error in the switch.

The Current Account Switch Service is a free, regulated process backed by a guarantee. Over 99% of switches complete within seven working days. You don't need to contact your old bank, employer, or any direct-debit operators — your new bank does it all.

What you'll need

  • Proof of identity (passport or driving licence)
  • Proof of address (utility bill or council tax bill from last 3 months)
  • Your old account details (sort code and account number)

The steps

  1. 01

Choose the new bank and account

Pick a current account that suits how you bank: branch access, app quality, rewards, overdraft buffers and switching incentives are all worth comparing. Look for the Current Account Switch Guarantee logo to confirm the bank is part of CASS.

  2. 02

Apply to open the new account

Apply online or in branch with your ID and proof of address. The new bank runs a credit check (usually a soft search first, then a hard search if you proceed). If approved, you can start the switch as part of the same application.

  3. 03

Tell the new bank you want to switch using CASS

Tick the option to use the Current Account Switch Service and choose a switch date at least seven working days ahead. Give them the sort code and account number of the old account you want to close.

  4. 04

Leave both accounts open during the seven-day window

Don't try to move money yourself. Your new bank coordinates with your old bank in the background. Standing orders, direct debits and incoming payments are moved automatically.

  5. 05

    Switch day (working day 7)

Your remaining balance moves to the new account, the old account closes, and any future payments in or out of the old account number are redirected to the new one for at least three years (extended indefinitely if redirections are still being used).

  6. 06

    Check the first month carefully

Verify each direct debit and standing order shows up on the new account, salary lands correctly, and there are no missed payments. If anything goes wrong because of the switch, the Current Account Switch Guarantee refunds the charges and interest.

Common pitfalls

  • Don't cancel direct debits yourself — let CASS move them
  • If you have an overdraft, the new bank may not match it — check first
  • Joint accounts need both parties to agree to the switch

FAQ

Does switching banks affect my credit score?
The application itself leaves a hard search, which can have a small short-term effect. Closing an old current account can affect average account age. Neither is usually a significant or lasting issue for most people.
Can I switch if I'm in my overdraft?
Yes, but the new bank must be willing to offer you an overdraft to take over the balance. If not, you'll need to clear the overdraft first or stay where you are.
What if a payment is missed during the switch?
You're covered by the Current Account Switch Guarantee. The new bank will refund any interest and charges caused by an error in the switch, on either the old or new account.
