What is the Ofgem energy price cap?

Last reviewed:

In short: From 1 July 2026 the cap on a dual-fuel direct-debit home is around £1,720 a year for typical use — about 7% lower than the spring quarter.

Ofgem's energy price cap limits the unit rates and standing charges that suppliers can charge customers on their default (standard variable) tariff. It is updated every three months.

The cap for the quarter from 1 July to 30 September 2026 sits at around £1,720 a year for a 'typical' dual-fuel direct-debit household — about a 7% fall from the April–June period, driven by lower wholesale gas prices.

The headline figure is an illustration, not a maximum bill. What you actually pay depends on your unit usage, region and meter type. Fixed tariffs are not affected by the cap and may be cheaper or more expensive.
