Last reviewed:

In short: £3,000 per person. Above that, gains on shares and second property are taxed at 18% (basic-rate) or 24% (higher-rate).

The annual exempt amount for Capital Gains Tax in 2026/27 is £3,000 per person. It was cut from £12,300 in 2022/23 down to £6,000 in 2023/24 and £3,000 in 2024/25, and has remained at £3,000 since.

Gains above the allowance are taxed at 18% (basic-rate) or 24% (higher- and additional-rate). From 30 October 2024 the rates on shares were aligned with the rates on residential property.

Gains inside an ISA, a SIPP or your main home (under Private Residence Relief) are exempt from CGT entirely.
