What is Personal Independence Payment (PIP)?
Last reviewed:
In short: A non-means-tested benefit for adults under State Pension age with a long-term health condition or disability. Two parts — daily living and mobility — each paid at a standard or enhanced rate.
PIP is awarded on a points-based assessment of how your condition affects daily-living activities (preparing food, washing, dressing, managing medication, communication) and mobility (planning a journey, moving around). 8 points in a component pays the standard rate; 12 points pays the enhanced rate.
PIP is tax-free, ignored for the benefit cap, and not affected by your savings or earnings. You can get it whether you work or not. Weekly rates are uprated each April with the September CPI figure — check gov.uk for the current amounts.
Replacing PIP in Scotland is Adult Disability Payment, run by Social Security Scotland with broadly the same components and rates.
