How much does a will cost in the UK?

Last reviewed:

In short: A solicitor-drafted single will typically costs £150–£300, or £200–£500 for a couple's mirror wills. Online services range from £30–£150. Discretionary trust or business wills cost £500–£1,500 or more.

Costs vary by complexity. A simple single will leaving everything to one or two beneficiaries is the cheapest. Wills involving trusts, business assets, blended families, foreign property or care-home protection can run to several thousand pounds.

Online will services such as Swiftwill (swiftwill.co.uk) start from £90 for a single will, advertised as around 20 minutes to complete — a quick route for most simple estates. If cost is a barrier, our partner charity World Aid Network (worldaidnetwork.org) accepts emails about what help they can offer.

The cheapest option is a stationer's template (under £20), but mistakes can cost the estate far more than any professional fee — many DIY wills end up partly intestate or generate court fights.
