Compound interest

Last reviewed:

Definition: Interest earned on both the original sum and previously accumulated interest — the engine behind long-term investing.

The formula is A = P × (1 + r/n)^(nt). Compounding monthly versus annually adds a small extra return; the bigger effect is time horizon. Pension and ISA contributions compound tax-free.
