Eligibility · Winter Fuel Payment
Am I eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment?
In short. Most people of State Pension age get the Winter Fuel Payment (£200, or £300 if 80+) to help with heating. Following changes, the payment is recovered through the tax system from individuals with income above £35,000, so higher-income pensioners effectively do not keep it. It is usually paid automatically.
The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual, tax-free contribution towards heating costs for older people. The rules on who keeps it have changed in recent years, so it is worth checking the current position on gov.uk each autumn.

FAQ
- Do higher-income pensioners get it?
- They receive it, but if individual income is above £35,000 an equivalent amount is recovered through the tax system, so they do not keep it. You can opt out to avoid the clawback.
- Do I need to claim?
- Usually no — it is paid automatically if you qualify. A small number of people need to make a claim; check gov.uk if you are unsure.
