Cost guide

How much does a UK funeral cost?

In short. SunLife's 2025 Cost of Dying report put the average attended UK funeral at £4,285 and the average unattended (direct) cremation at around £1,597. Add a wake and probate and the total 'cost of dying' averages over £9,200.

Funeral cost is driven mostly by burial vs cremation, attended vs unattended (direct), choice of funeral director, and add-ons like flowers, cars and a venue. Direct cremation is the fastest-growing option.

What changes the cost

  • Burial vs cremation (burial is 30–50% more)
  • Region (London is highest)
  • Whether you use a funeral director or arrange directly with crematorium/cemetery
  • Whether the deceased had a pre-paid funeral plan

Worth knowing

  • Under CMA price-display rules, funeral directors must publish standardised price lists for their main services
  • The Funeral Expenses Payment (England/Wales/NI) and Funeral Support Payment (Scotland) are means-tested grants for people on qualifying benefits
  • Direct (unattended) cremation is now offered by most major funeral providers and trade bodies recognise it as a standard option

FAQ

What help is available with funeral costs?
On qualifying benefits you can claim Funeral Expenses Payment (England/Wales/NI) of up to £1,000 plus burial/cremation fees; in Scotland the equivalent is Funeral Support Payment (similar amount). Both are claimable after the funeral.
What is a direct cremation?
An unattended cremation with no service. Typically £1,100–£1,800, often nationwide via pickup. Families can hold a separate memorial service afterwards.
Has anything changed recently?
In England, the £164 medical referee fee for cremations was abolished in May 2024 alongside the introduction of medical examiners — funerals should now cost slightly less.
