### 1. Ask what evidence the organisation accepts

A marriage or civil partnership certificate may be enough. HM Passport Office accepts double-barrelled marriage surnames. Check your exact change before buying a deed.

Check all names and details, print the final deed and follow its signing instructions with two adult witnesses present. GOV.UK notes some organisations reject witnesses who are close relatives or share your address. Sign additional originals properly if you need them.

### 4. Plan identity and account updates

Choose a sequence around travel, payroll, banking and benefits, and the evidence each organisation needs. A driving-licence update is not a universal first step. Keep a tracker of originals sent, returned and accepted.

### 5. Notify each organisation and keep your evidence

Update relevant ID, banks, employer, HMRC, benefit offices, pensions, insurers, healthcare and utilities. Do not assume one update changes every account. Keep the documents linking your names; a name change alone does not invalidate your will.
